A car overturned in a three-vehicle crash, blocking one of the main routes into Liverpool.

A Skoda, Ford Fusion and Vauxhall Meriva crashed just after 06:45 GMT at Switch Island.

Firefighters cut people free from the cars that did not overturn, taking the roof off one and doors off the other.

The M57 was closed both ways from Switch Island to Kirkby, as was Dunnings Bridge Road from Copy Lane but the roads reopened at about 13:00 GMT.

A Merseyside Fire Service spokesman said firefighters helped move a man, who was in the car which had its roof removed, on a board to a waiting ambulance.

They also used cutting equipment to remove two doors to release another man. He was taken to University Hospital Aintree.

The male driver of the Skoda is described as being in a critical condition.

His female passenger, along with the male drivers of the Vauxhall and the Ford Fusion suffered injuries which were not life-threatening.
