Man hit by car on Cheshire M56 motorway dies

A man has died after he was hit by a car on a motorway in Cheshire.

The man was on the eastbound carriageway of the M56 between junctions 12 and 14 when he was knocked down at about 17:45 GMT on Monday.

Officers investigating the death urged the driver of a red car they believe earlier swerved to avoid the man near the Runcorn turn-off to contact them.

Police warned drivers the carriageway would remain closed from junction 12 to 14 until early on Tuesday.
