Warrington petrol station burglary explosives scare

Explosives experts were mobilised and 17 homes evacuated following a burglary at a petrol station in Warrington.

Police called to reports of a burglary at the premises on Chester Road at 01:30 put a 100m (330ft) cordon in place after finding a strong smell.

The roof of the building had been significantly damaged and an ATM machine tampered with, officers said.

Residents were allowed to return home at 08:00.

They were put up in a nearby hotel for the night.

Police said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the burglary.
