A man was thrown into a canal as he tried to help three men who were being attacked by a gang, police have said.

The man and two friends from Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, intervened when three men, from north Wales, were assaulted by the group of men and women.

Five men were injured during the attack in an alleyway near the canal off Russell Street in Chester city centre in the early hours of Saturday.

The man who was thrown into the canal was not hurt, officers said.

A 28-year-old man, from north Wales, is being treated for head injuries.

Two men aged 27 and 43, also from north Wales, and two men aged 19, from Ellesmere Port, who were also assaulted, suffered cuts and bruises.

The offenders ran off down the canal towards Hoole, Cheshire Constabulary said.
