A 37-year-old woman has become the fifth person arrested over a bomb left in a doorway of a Wirral flat.

The device was found by the occupant of the flat on Bude Close on the Beechwood estate, Birkenhead, on Thursday.

The woman has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an explosive. A man, aged 37, has also been held for the same offence.

Meanwhile a man, 19, arrested on Friday remains in custody. Two men, 18 and 25, were released on police bail.

A controlled explosion was carried out on the bomb.

The men released on bail, both from Beechwood, were arrested on suspicion of committing an offence under Section 5 of the Explosives Act.

Police believe it was a targeted attack and are trying to establish if it was part of a wider dispute.

A number of properties on the estate were evacuated while the device was dealt with.

Officers from the Ministry of Defence's explosive ordnance disposal unit arrived at about 17:15 BST and carried out a controlled explosion.
