A controlled explosion was carried out on a bomb left in a doorway of a flat on Merseyside, police say.

The device was found by the occupant of the flat on Bude Close on the Beechwood estate, Wirral, on Thursday.

Two men, aged 25 and 18, who are both from Beechwood, have been arrested on suspicion of committing an offence under Section 5 of the Explosives Act.

Police believe it was a targeted attack and are trying to establish if it was part of a wider dispute.

A number of properties on the estate were evacuated while police officers dealt with the device.

Officers from the Ministry of Defence's explosive ordnance disposal unit arrived at about 17:15 BST and carried out a controlled explosion.
