A fire at a Merseyside skip firm created a plume of black smoke visible across Liverpool.

The blaze started in a pile of waste materials measuring 20m (65ft) squared and 6m (19ft) high at the site on Redfern Street, Kirkdale.

A large number of plastic bales also fuelled the fire, which started at 11:50 BST. There were no reports of injuries, the fire service said.

Firefighters used a digger to move surrounding waste away from the flames.

The fire was brought under control by 16:00 BST but will take several hours to fully extinguish, the fire service said.
