David Moyes to join Manchester United: Everton fans react
Everton fans have been reacting to the announcement their manager David Moyes is leaving the club for Manchester United.
Moyes, 50, has been in charge at Goodison Park since 2002. He replaces fellow Scot Sir Alex Ferguson, who steps down after more than 26 years at Old Trafford.
Manchester United confirmed Moyes has signed a six-year deal and will take charge on 1 July.
Phil Smith, 50, butcher from Kirkby
Good luck to Moyes, but I'm really upset to see him leave. He deserves glory, he has been a great servant for Everton but the chairman has been holding him back with the lack of funds to buy players. He's a proper grafter though and I think he has taken us as far as he can. I think it's a big risk by United, as they're big boots to fill.
John Jarvis, 54, who lives close to Goodison Park
I really am made up for him, he really has made it now! A few fans I know aren't happy, but I think he is going at the right time. We aren't doing too bad, we have been in far worse situations so I think he is leaving on a relative high. He is the best choice for the United job, but he's never as good as Fergie, and that's coming from an Everton fan. As much as we don't like Manchester United on Merseyside, they are a fantastic club and it's all down to him.
Billy Griffith, 56, Liverpool taxi driver
It looked like it was going to happen, as he has been very good for the club. He has stabilised Everton - under Walter Smith every season was a relegation battle, and now we are a top six club. We've been unlucky not to get in the Champions League to be honest. Who knows what is next for the club, we shall see.
Carol Sherrington, 55, and Lianne Devine, 22, who work at County Filling Station, Walton
I think he has done all right, I mean look at where we are in the league now - above Liverpool, which is the main thing - and I think he has achieved all he can. The last home game of the season against West Ham will be very interesting, I'm sure he will get a good reaction from the fans. Watch now - (Wigan Manager) Roberto Martinez will come to Everton, Marouane Fellaini will go to play for United and Rooney will now go to Paris Saint-Germain! David Moyes' dad comes in here for his brekkie before every Everton home game, he's lovely.
Paul Walsh, 29, from Whiston
It wasn't a big surprise, and maybe a change is what we need. I think Roberto Martinez could be next, I think his teams play better football than Moyes's Everton anyway. Moyes has done a brilliant job with Everton, but our football has been too negative sometimes. He has lacked money here, so will he be a better manager with more funds to use, who knows? I've always said he would be over to United eventually.
