One of the Mersey tunnels closed for more than two hours after a false fire alarm.

The Wallasey Tunnel was closed in both directions at about 19:20 GMT on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the tunnels said the closure was made after a fire alarm went off in an under-deck pump room.

Fire crews were called to the scene but the incident was declared a false alarm and the tunnel re-opened just before 22:00.
