More than 80 people witnessed a man being shot in the legs as he was about to play football in Liverpool, police have said.

The 27-year-old was hit on a football pitch at Hillfoot Road, Woolton, just before 14:00 GMT on Saturday.

Police said the gunman jogged on to the pitch before firing, then fled towards Allerton in a silver-coloured car.

The victim was taken to hospital where he is recovering. Ch Supt Ngaire Waine said the incident was very rare.

He said: "We've got over 80 people who witnessed it.

"It's a very rare thing to happen anywhere in Liverpool, particularly in this part of Liverpool.

"It was brazen, the behaviour."

She said she wanted to thank local residents for their tolerance and anyone who had already come forward with information.
