Footballer shot in legs before kick-off in Liverpool

A man was shot in both legs as he was about to play football in a Liverpool park, police have said.

Merseyside Police said the gunman pulled up in a silver coloured car and shot the 27-year-old man just before 14:00 GMT on Hillfoot Road on Saturday.

The attacker drove off towards Allerton. The wounded man's injuries are not life threatening.

Det Insp Tom Keaton appealed for witnesses and said: "This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated."

He added: "This incident took place prior to a local football match and there were a number of people in the area at the time and we are fortunate that nobody else was injured."
