Body found in River Mersey near Widnes

A body which is believed to be that of a missing teenage boy has been found in a river on Merseyside.

Police were called to the Silver Jubilee Bridge, which crosses the River Mersey between Runcorn and Widnes, at 08:00 BST on Thursday after receiving reports of a body in the water.

A teenager was reported missing by his family just before 22:00 BST on Wednesday, Cheshire Police said.

His family have been informed but the body has not been formally identified.

Forensic officers have been called to the scene to carry out tests.

The circumstances surrounding the death are as yet unexplained and CCTV in the vicinity of the bridge is being examined.

Police would like to speak to anyone who may have been near the bridge between 19:00 BST and 23:00 BST on Wednesday.
