The body of a teenage girl has been found in undergrowth near a Merseyside observatory.

Police found the girl, believed to be in her late teens, next to the Bidston Hill Observatory, near Birkenhead, at about 17:30 BST on Saturday.

She has yet to be formally identified. The results of a post-mortem examination are expected later.

An 18-year-old man from Moreton, Wirral, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

The observatory, which was built in 1866, was used by the Natural Environment Research Council until 2004.

Operations have since moved to the University of Liverpool.
