St Helens candidates in election count scuffle
A scuffle broke out between Labour and Liberal Democrat politicians during an election count in St Helens, according to witnesses.
The row sparked as Liberal Democrats in St Helens suffered setbacks, including leader Brian Spencer losing his seat.
Witnesses said there was a confrontation between Mr Spencer and Labour's Mark Johnson, who fell across a table and landed on his mother.
Police officers intervened, but no arrests were made.'Lot of police'
Labour councillor Andy Bowden said: "As the results were coming in it was becoming clear the Lib Dems had lost quite a few seats.
"There were quite a lot of police in the room and at least two interjected and separated everyone."
Mr Bowden said Mr Johnson may have twisted his ankle and was giving a statement to police.
Lib Dem councillor Michael Haw said Mr Spencer was upset at losing his seat.
Merseyside Police said it had received a complaint of an assault.
