Merseyside Police have said they will escort "cash in transit" vans by air throughout December as part of a campaign to deter armed robbers.

Attacks on secure vans and delivery staff have resulted in 27 arrests in Merseyside over the past year.

Police intend to use helicopters and ground vehicles to shadow cash deliveries in the run-up to Christmas.

A police spokesperson said the robberies had "terrible psychological effects" on security guards.
