Wirral Council leader Steve Foulkes survives 'no confidence' vote

The Labour leader of Wirral Borough Council has survived calls for him to step down.

A motion of no confidence in Steve Foulkes was put forward by Conservative leader Jeff Green.

It was defeated by 38 votes to 26 at a council meeting on Monday night.

Mr Green had called for Mr Foulkes to be replaced after a series of critical reports into the running of the authority over recent years.

The Conservatives ran the council until its Tory-Lib Dem coalition collapsed in May.

He believes the minority Labour council should form an all-party cabinet and wrote to councillors before the vote, urging their support.

Mr Foulkes has said he is committed to the need for all parties to work together to improve the administration.
