Man arrested in Widnes dies hours later

A 25-year-old man died less than two hours after he was arrested and restrained by police in Cheshire.

The man was arrested for alleged affray by police called to Lacey Street, Widnes, at about 17:15 BST on Monday.

It is understood police officers used pepper spray during the arrest. Shortly afterwards, at Runcorn police station, he became unwell.

He was taken to hospital but later died. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out later.

IPCC investigators were in Widnes on Tuesday morning to begin gathering evidence and gain initial accounts from police officers.

The man's parents have been informed and investigators will be speaking to them to explain the IPCC's role and what is known at this stage.
