Knowsley Safari Park 40 years on
Knowsley Safari Park is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
The park, which was created by the 18th Earl of Derby, opened in July 1971.
It was the first safari park in the UK to be built close to a city and in the centre of an area of suburban housing.
More than 200,000 people visited the park in the first month of opening, the large number of visitors on the first day blocked the surrounding roads with many cars breaking down in the long queues.
David Ross, general manager of the park recalls travelling to Africa to obtain the original animals for the park.Continue reading the main story
