More than 100 firefighters have been tackling a blaze at a Cheshire hotel which is based in a 19th Century gothic castle.

About 20 fire engines were called to Grade I-listed Peckforton Castle at Tarporley in the early hours.

Seventy guests were evacuated from the 48-bedroom hotel after the fire began in the drawing room.

The number of pumps has been reduced to 15. Crews from Cheshire, Merseyside and Shropshire were at the scene.

The castle, which is a popular wedding venue, has been used as the setting for episodes of Dr Who and the 2010 film Robin Hood.
