Duncan McTier charged over music school sex assaults

A man has been charged by detectives investigating historical sexual abuse at music schools in Manchester.

Duncan McTier, 59, of Woodland Gardens, Isleworth, Middlesex has been charged with four sex offences, police said.

Greater Manchester Police said he was charged with the indecent assault of a 21-year-old woman in 1994, and sexual assaults on a 17-year-old girl in 1985 and a 23-year-old woman in 1988.

He is due to appear at Manchester Magistrates' Court on 23 May.

'World's foremost'

A force spokeswoman said the alleged offences involved pupils at different music establishments in Manchester understood to include the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM).

The RNCM said it was "unable to comment" on the charges.

Mr McTier currently teaches at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Their website describes him as "one of the world's foremost double bass soloists and teachers".

Police confirmed that this was the second arrest under Operation Kiso, set up following the conviction of former teacher Michael Brewer and his ex-wife Kay.

The pair abused former pupil Frances Andrade between 1978 and 1982. Mrs Andrade took her own life after giving evidence at their trial.

The other arrest, in February last year, was of violin teacher Wen Zhou Li who taught at RNCM and Chetham's School of Music.
