Man, 30, dies after being hit by car in Manchester city centre

A 30-year-old man has died after he was hit by a car in Manchester city centre.

The man suffered a serious head injury when he was struck by a Volkswagen Passat in Essex Street at about 04:30 GMT. He was taken to hospital, but later died.

A 23-year-old man was breathalysed. He has been arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol and dangerous driving.

He remains in police custody for questioning.

Sgt Mark Thomas said: "Sadly, the man lost his fight for life a short time after the collision.

"I would ask anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the collision to contact us as soon as possible."
