An "extremely possessive and controlling man" has been jailed after he violently assaulted his girlfriend.

Lee Edwards, 29, of Mayfield Drive, Middleton, was sentenced to 10 years at Bolton Crown Court for grievous bodily harm with intent.

He attacked the victim when they got into an argument after a night out in August, Greater Manchester Police said.

He punched her in the face breaking her cheekbone and bit her on the cheek, nose and shoulder.

The woman attempted to leave the house but Edwards refused to let her leave, police said.

When she tried to crawl away he threw her on her front and repeatedly stamped on her neck and back.

Police said Edwards also strangled her until she could not breathe.

She escaped the house after Edwards fell asleep.

Det Con Michael Berger said: "Thankfully this woman had the strength to leave and report the assault to police before it could happen again."
