Two men have been arrested over an attack on a Rugby League player which may result in him losing an eye.

Hull KR's Sean Gleeson was repeatedly punched in the face by three men outside Ibiza Bar, King Street in Wigan, Greater Manchester on Sunday.

Gleeson, 26, who is originally from Wigan, suffered serious injuries to his eye and eye socket.

Two men, aged 21 and 24, arrested on suspicion of assault were have been bailed until 28 April.

Gleeson remains in hospital for treatment and police said he may lose his eye.

Police said he was involved in a fight with one man before "others joined in".

'Running away'

The men left him in the road and ran away up Kings Street towards Wallgate.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses.

Det Sgt Peter Carletti said: "You might not have seen the actual attack but you may have seen a group of white men running away.

"I would urge anyone who thinks they may know who is responsible to come forward and speak to us."

Gleeson signed for Hull KR last year but has yet to play this season after a string of injury problems.

He previously played for Salford, Wakefield, Widnes and Wigan, and has represented Ireland at international level.
