A convicted killer who absconded while on day release from jail has been arrested.

Paul Maxwell, 49, who is thought to have been serving his sentence at HMP Buckley Hall, disappeared while visiting Rochdale, Greater Manchester, on Friday.

He was arrested at 11:50 GMT in Albert Park, Salford, with a second man.

He was jailed for life in 1996 for murder and robbery of 85-year-old Joe Smales in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

Another man he was with has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an escapee. Both men are in police custody.
