Hammer attack burglars target Oldham home

Two burglars kicked down the door of a house and attacked a man with a hammer before fleeing, police said.

The 69-year-old man was hit twice when his house in Spencer Street, Oldham, was targeted and he went to investigate at about 01:00 GMT.

He crawled to his wife in the bedroom and then barricaded themselves in.

The intruders stole a mobile phone and a handbag before running off towards Gower Street, police said.

The homeowner is in hospital in a stable condition and is being treated for a fractured skull.

His wife was extremely distressed but unharmed, police said.

Det Con Andrew Day said it was a "brutal assault" by "two determined and dangerous criminals" and appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
