The family of a man who died a week after he was punched in Manchester city centre have paid tribute to a "likeable man who was loved by many".

John Millett, 34, from Salford, was found with head injuries in Deansgate at the junction of John Dalton Street on 24 January.

His family said he was known as Salford John, and was "a man with a big heart".

They said in a statement that it was "unbelievable" he had "lost his life as a result of just one punch".

The statement said: "A piece of our hearts went with John when he died.

"No words will ever be enough to say how much we miss him."

Simon Tarry, 27, of Ennerdale Road, Stretford, appeared before Manchester magistrates on 27 January charged with assault and affray.

He was remanded in custody until his next hearing at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square on 10 February.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about what happened to contact them.
