Pedestrian dies after New Year's Eve road collision

A 37-year-old man has died following a collision on New Year's Eve in Manchester in which another man was seriously injured.

Two men were crossing Downing Street, Ardwick, shortly before 20:30 GMT when they were struck by a Vauxhall Vectra.

The second man who is 55 is in a stable condition in hospital but with serious injuries.

No arrests have been made by police who have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Sgt Lee Westhead said: "An investigation into the circumstances of this collision has been launched and the families of the men involved are being supported by our family liaison officers.

"I would ask anyone who witnessed the collision to ring the Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

"Our thoughts are with the families of the men involved at this terrible time."
