Man, 62, dies after Wigan door-knock stabbing

Diamond Street, Leigh Steven Butterworth was stabbed four times and then his wallet was stolen at the property in Leigh

A man stabbed four times after answering a knock at the door of his Wigan home has died.

Steven Butterworth's property, on Diamond Street, Leigh, was targeted on 25 August. Police said a man stabbed the 62-year-old and took his wallet.

Mr Butterworth was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary, where he died on Friday. A post-mortem test is now due.

David Dempsey, 42, of Kermishaw Nook, Tyldesley, was charged earlier this month with attempted murder.

He was also charged with robbery and possession of an offensive weapon.
