A couple who sent explicit messages to a teenage girl and tried to entice her into sex have been sentenced.

Andrew Peat, 27, of Broadbottom Road, Hyde, was jailed for two years after he pleaded guilty to a number of child sex offences.

Amy Willett, 23, of Haslemere Drive, Cheadle, Hulme, admitted causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

Her 12-month jail sentence was suspended for two years at Minshull Street Crown Court.

Peat approached his 15-year-old victim in June 2012 on a social networking site - even though she clearly stated her age on her profile page.

Within minutes of their first conversation, he started sending sexually explicit messages. Peat also said that he and Willett, his then girlfriend, were willing to meet up with her.

'Online grooming'

A couple of days later, Willett messaged the girl herself and three of them began contacting each other over email, phone and the social networking site.

The messages included plans to meet the youngster, who was from the West Midlands, and entice her into sex.

Peat also sent images of a sexual nature to the teenager.

The pair were arrested after the victim's mother found out about the messages.

Police officers also discovered nine indecent images of children on Peat's home computer after he was arrested.

He pleaded guilty to causing a child to engage in sexual activity, causing a child to watch a sexual act and nine counts of making indecent images.

Detective Constable Phil Kennedy from Greater Manchester Police said: "Both defendants knew they were in touch with a 15-year-old girl, but that did not stop them from their campaign of online grooming.

"The discovery of nine indecent images at Peat's house illustrates that he had no issues with child sex offending. Indecent images of this nature endorse the abuse of children. "
