Homes evacuated after hole appears in Stalybridge road

Houses have been evacuated and a street closed to traffic after a large hole appeared in a road in Greater Manchester.

Police closed Huddersfield Road in both directions between Grove Road and Grafton Street in Stalybridge when the hole appeared at about 20:00 BST.

People were evacuated from two homes as a safety precaution, police said.

The "sinkhole" was being checked by engineers for potential gas leaks, officers added.
