A man charged with the murder, rape and assault of his ex-girlfriend in Greater Manchester has appeared in court.

Linzi Ashton, 25, was found dead at her home on Westbourne Road in Winton, Salford, on 29 June.

A post-mortem examination found the mother-of-two had multiple injuries and died after pressure to her neck.

Michael Cope, 28, of no fixed address, appeared before Manchester Magistrates' Court and was remanded to appear at the city's crown court on Tuesday.

He was arrested at an address in Leigh on Friday.

The assault charge refers to a report made by Ms Ashton on 18 May, while the rape charge concerns an allegation made by her on 20 May.

Greater Manchester Police has previously referred the case to the Independent Police Complaints Commission for investigation.
