Rochdale head teacher screwdriver stabbing accused remanded

A man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after a school head teacher was stabbed in the face and neck with a screwdriver.

Gillian Kay, 39, had to be airlifted to hospital after being injured outside her home in Rochdale, on Thursday afternoon.

Mark Pierson, 48, of Belfield Old Road, Rochdale, was remanded in custody at Rochdale and Bury Magistrates' Court.

He is due to appear at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on May 17.

Ms Kay, who is head of Propps Hall Primary School, Failsworth, Oldham, received treatment for nine stab wounds and has since been released from hospital, the court heard.

She was attacked outside her home in Shaw Road, Thornham, just after 17:00 BST.
