Manchester EDL protest: 15 arrested, five charged

Fifteen people were arrested after a protest by hundreds of supporters and opponents of the English Defence League (EDL) in Manchester.

About 700 EDL demonstrators gathered in Albert Square with about 350 people taking part in a counter protest.

Police stepped up their presence and said trouble had been minimal.

Ch Supt John O'Hare said: "I would like to thank both the people of Manchester and the majority of protesters for their conduct."

Five people were later charged, two for public order offences, two for possession of a class B drug and one for being drunk and disorderly.
