Sam Walker: Lantern tribute for hit-and-run victim

Family and friends of a five-year-old boy who was killed by a hit-and-run driver 10 years ago will mark his 16th birthday by releasing lanterns later.

Sam Walker was crossing Hardy Lane, Chorlton, Manchester, with his mother, sister and cousin on 9 February 2003 when he was struck.

The gathering in Sam's memory takes place at 19:00 GMT near his memorial bench in Chorlton Park.

A £20,000 reward is on offer and police have renewed appeals for information.

Sam's mother Jackie Thomson said: "I want this resolved so my family and I can put the agony behind us and maybe then we can grieve together for our Samuel."

Sgt Lee Westhead, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "This weekend he [Sam] should have been celebrating his 16th birthday and so we will be on Hardy Lane and Burrows Avenue in Chorlton to remind the community of what happened and to urge anyone with information to speak to us."

The boy was hit by a Mitsubishi Galant, travelling from the direction of Barlow Moor Road.

The abandoned car was later found on a footpath running off Riverside Avenue.
