Serious 'spanner' assault after car rammed in Manchester

A father and son were seriously assaulted by men armed with an object thought to be a spanner after their car was rammed in Manchester, police said.

Officers said the unprovoked attack happened at 18:05 GMT on Thursday, when the family's Honda Civic approached a roundabout on Mauldeth Road in Burnage.

A BMW 3 series rammed the car three times. A 54-year-old and his son, 25, got out of the Honda and were punched and struck with the weapon.

Two men have now been arrested.

'Showered with glass'

Police said the pair, aged 25 and 28, were held on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Both remain in police custody.

The Honda's back window was smashed by the weapon with two grandparents and the 54-year-old's wife "showered with broken glass" inside.

The father and son were taken to hospital with serious bruising and wounds.

Det Ch Insp Dave Pester, from Greater Manchester Police, appealed for witnesses to come forward.

He said: "We are investigating this as a completely unprovoked attack on three generations of the same family who have understandably been left shocked by what happened."
