Elderly woman dies after 'electric blanket' fire in Salford

An elderly woman has died following a fire at her Salford home, thought to have been due to an electric blanket.

The 86-year-old suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation in the blaze, which took place on Thursday at about 09:00 GMT on Park Avenue, Pendlebury.

An air ambulance took the woman to Wythenshawe Hospital but she died on Thursday evening.

Home safety checks are being provided to over 400 homes in the area, with fire safety officers offering advice.

'Valiant attempt'

Councillor David Acton, chair of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority, said preliminary investigations suggested the fire was caused by a blanket.

"Our firefighters made a valiant attempt to save this woman's life, but tragically her injuries proved too much for her to survive.

"We urge everyone to use such items with caution - ensure you follow the manufacturer's instructions and if in any doubt your blanket or heater is not working absolutely perfectly, do not use it."

Salford charity Helping Hands will also be checking residents electric blankets for free on 21 and 22 February.
