Chetham's School of Music: Man held in sex abuse inquiry

The school is assisting police

A 57-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating allegations of historical sex abuse at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester.

Chinese violin teacher Wen Zhou Li, of Cheshire, is being held on suspicion of rape, Greater Manchester Police said.

Detectives are looking at more than 20 reports by ex-pupils of sexual offences involving a "small number of teachers".

Ex-choir director Michael Brewer and his ex-wife Kay were found guilty of indecently assaulting a former pupil.

They had both abused Frances Andrade, between 1978 and 1982. Mrs Andrade took her own life after giving evidence at their trial.

'Challenging time'

Mr Li has been suspended from the Royal Northern College of Music, where he also teaches, a spokesman said.

Chetham's officials said Mr Li, a part-time tutor, has been suspended and encouraged anyone with information to contact police.

Headteacher Claire Moreland said: "We are working with the police to get to the bottom of these serious allegations.

"My team and I are working hard to ensure that students, staff and parents are given all the information and support they need at this time.

"It is a very challenging time for all of us and we are extremely heartened by all the messages of support we have had."

Brewer, of Selly Oak, Birmingham, was convicted of carrying out the sexual abuse in his office at Chetham's.

Hilary Brewer, also known by her middle name Kay, and of Knowl Gap Avenue, Haslingden, was convicted of indecently assaulting the same victim when she was an adult at their then family home.
