Mr Pal and Mr Simpson have not been seen since the early hours of New Year's Day

Police divers in Greater Manchester are searching for a student and a local man who went missing on New Year's Day.

Officers have searched Manchester Ship Canal near Victoria Warehouse in Trafford where Indian student Souvik Pal, 19, was last seen.

Divers have also been at Vernon Park to search the River Goyt for Michael Simpson, 22, from Heaton Norris, who went missing after a party in Bredbury.

A spokesman said police wanted to hear from anyone who had seen either man.

Mr Pal was last seen at about 22:00 at the Warehouse Project, Trafford Wharf Road, Manchester and was reported missing by a flatmate at about 05:30 GMT on Tuesday.

'Coming to UK'

Police said he became separated from six friends, who did not see him leave.

Det Ch Insp Colin Larkin said Mr Pal had only been in the country for a few months and police were "growing increasingly concerned" for his safety.

"Specialist officers have been in contact with Souvik's family in India and our understanding is that his father will be coming to the UK," he said.

Mr Pal is 5ft 7in (1.7m) tall, of slim build and speaks with an Indian accent. He has a scar on the right side of his forehead.

When last seen he was wearing a pale denim long-sleeved shirt with a collar, grey chino trousers and navy blue leather boots.

A police spokesman said Mr Simpson had been separated from his friends at the party at a house on Stockport Road West and left.

'Beside themselves'

He said the 22-year-old, who is slim and 5ft 7in (1.7m) tall, with light brown hair and blue eyes, had not been seen since.

He added that Mr Simpson had been wearing a black V-neck jumper with a white T-shirt underneath, blue jeans and white trainers.

Det Insp Julia Bowden said he had "never been missing before and, as people can imagine, his family and friends are absolutely beside themselves with worry that Michael has not returned from his night out".

"Officers are working to piece together Michael's movements in the lead up to his disappearance and we are appealing for anyone that may have seen him in the early hours of New Year's Day to get in touch."
