A three-month-old boy has escaped with minor injuries after falling down a lift shaft in his pram.

The baby was in a car seat in the pram when he fell into the lift shaft at Smyths Toy Store at Middlebrook Retail Park in Horwich, Greater Manchester.

He was treated in hospital for cuts to his face after the fall on Wednesday.

A Smyths spokesman said the baby's mother had pushed the pram through the lift doors on the first floor before she realised the lift had not arrived.

The spokesman said staff at the firm "deeply regret this incident, are very concerned and have conveyed our best wishes to the family".

He added: "The lifts in all our stores are covered by a maintenance agreement and are regularly inspected by a reputable lift company.

"We are now working with the lift company and the public authorities to determine the cause of this accident."

A Bolton Council spokeswoman said the lift had been cordoned off and a health and safety officer had visited the store.

She said a "full investigation" had been launched.
