A fire has destroyed the roof and damaged two wings of a private hospital in Bury.

The blaze, believed to have been started deliberately, erupted at the Alpha Hospital on Buller Street in Elton at about 16:20 GMT on Thursday.

A spokesperson for the hospital said no-one was injured and all staff and patients had been evacuated safely.

Greater Manchester Police said one person has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

Firefighters said the hospital wings will be out of action "for some time".

Billy Myers, of Greater Manchester Fire Service, said: "It's damaged the whole of two wings of the hospital.

"The roofs are completely destroyed on both sections."
