Singer Mick Hucknall has thanked his home city of Manchester for the "amazing start" it gave him.

The former Simply Red frontman has been awarded an honorary doctorate in music by the University of Manchester and said the city had been "very good to me", particularly in terms of his education.

"I had a great primary education, a wonderful experience at Tameside College, I did my degree at Manchester Polytechnic and it worked for me," he said.

"I achieved what I needed to do and it's thanks to my experience growing up here that put me there."
