Ajax v Manchester City: Fans clash before Amsterdam game

Twenty-five people have been arrested after fights in the red light area of Amsterdam ahead of a Champions League game between Ajax and Manchester City.

Amsterdam Police said trouble broke out at about 17:00 local time (16:00 BST), with arrests made for "public violence" offences.

The majority of those arrested are believed to be local. The number of Manchester City fans held is not known.

Ajax won 3-1. Police said: "We hope it will remain calm after the match."

She said extra police had been deployed to the city centre, as the force had expected it "would be busy before and after the match".

She added the area had become "calmer and more quiet" as fans had headed to the Amsterdam Arena for the game.
