A Wigan man has died after being pushed over in the street outside a bar, police have said.

Officers were called to Wigan Royal Infirmary in the early hours of Monday after receiving reports of a 60-year-old man with serious head injuries.

A police spokesman said he was believed to have been hurt after being pushed over outside Chicago Rock Cafe on King Street at around 01:30 BST.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

The spokesman said a post-mortem examination was due to be carried out to establish the cause of the man's death, but he was believed to have been "pushed before falling backwards [and] striking his head on the pavement".

Det Insp Andy Cunliffe said: "We have established that there were are a number of people outside Chicago Rock on King Street at the time the man sustained his injuries [and] we remain keen to speak to a group of women who were seen outside just before the incident.

"I would ask this group or anyone else who may have been in the area on Sunday to come forward."
