Man's escape from Levenshulme fire 'remarkable'

A man had a "remarkable" escape from a fire in a flat over a takeaway restaurant in Manchester.

Fire crews found the man on the roof of the terraced building in Stockport Road, Levenshulme at 02:42 BST.

The 49-year-old was rescued by firefighters just before the blaze spread across the roof into neighbouring buildings.

Investigators from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are trying to discover the cause of the blaze.

"The man was very lucky, the fact that he had managed to exit was remarkable," said John Aspinall of the service.

"Quite soon after we got him off the roof, the fire then spread."

The man received minor injuries.
