A man has been jailed for nine years after admitting the manslaughter of a friend in Greater Manchester who died after a "petty argument" between them.

Edward Worton, 31, was found with head injuries at a house in Lower Bamford Close, Middleton, on 3 February.

On the same day, Arron Ward, 28, told a friend he had hit Mr Worton on the back of the head, police said.

Ward was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court after pleading guilty to manslaughter at an earlier hearing.

Police said Ward, of Burton Street, Middleton, had been drinking in a number of pubs with Mr Worton on 2 February before heading to the property in Lower Bamford Close.

After further drinks with friends there, an argument started shortly after a taxi was called in the early hours of 3 February.

'Face the consequences'

Later that day, Ward spoke to a friend over the phone and sent him a text saying he thought he had killed Mr Worton, police said.

Senior investigating officer Andy Tattersall said: "It seems Mr Worton needlessly lost his life following a petty argument with Ward.

"Ward will now have to face up to the consequences of what happened that night and live with it for the rest of his life."

Greater Manchester Police said no further action would be taken against Arron Ward's brother Vincent Ward, who was initially charged following Mr Worton's death.
