A man charged over the death of a woman who was robbed of a handbag which contained her husband's ashes has appeared in court.

Nellie Geraghty, 79, was found clutching the strap of the bag which was taken from her in Shaw, Greater Manchester, on 24 November.

Mark Royle, 37, of no fixed address but previously from Shaw, was charged with manslaughter and robbery on Monday.

He appeared before Oldham magistrates where he was remanded in custody.

The 37-year-old is due to appear before Manchester Minshull Streeet Crown Court on 13 March.

Following the attack last year, Mrs Geraghty was found just before midday in the alleyway leading from Elizabeth Grove to Kershaw Street. She was taken to Royal Oldham Hospital with serious head injuries but died the following day.
