Sports car crash officer was on BBC police pursuit show

PC Fletcher had a Facebook group started in his honour after appearing on the programme

A police officer who crashed and wrote off a sports car had featured in a BBC show about police pursuits.

PC Paul Fletcher had appeared on BBC One's Car Wars, which showed Greater Manchester Police's team of high-speed pursuit officers.

Mr Fletcher was driving a £33,000 VW Golf R which crashed in Old Trafford in the early hours of 15 December.

He has been temporarily suspended from driving duties while an internal investigation takes place.

Mr Fletcher was so popular on the programme that a Facebook group called The Paul Fletcher Appreciation Society was set up.

The car was on loan to Greater Manchester Police while its performance as a police car was assessed when the crash happened.

Few details have been released about the crash

Mr Fletcher had to be cut from the vehicle by a fire crew and was taken to hospital to be treated for a back injury.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman refused to reveal details of how the crash happened.

He said that "as a result of the incident, GMP is reviewing its policy on officers test driving cars".

No other vehicles were involved in the crash involving the high-performance car, which is billed as the fastest accelerating Golf going from 0 to 62mph in 5.7 seconds and with a 155mph top speed.
