Mother in court over girl's death in Moss Side

A woman has appeared in court charged with the murder of her four-year-old daughter who was found dead at her home in Manchester.

Chantelle Blake, 31, is accused of killing her daughter Kaiya, whose body was found at a house in Garthorne Close, Moss Side, on Thursday evening.

Ms Blake was remanded in custody after a brief hearing at Manchester City Magistrates' Court.

She is due to appear at Manchester Crown Court on Monday.

Ms Blake had earlier attended Manchester Royal Infirmary and "expressed concerns" about her child.

A post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death has proved inconclusive, and further tests are being carried out.

Manchester City Council confirmed they had had contact with the family prior to the incident.

A spokesman said they were working closely with the independent Manchester Safeguarding Children's Board to establish the circumstances of the child's death.
