Chinese Buddhists pray for New Year luck in Manchester

Members of Manchester's Chinese community have gathered at a Buddhist temple to welcome in the Chinese New Year.

Hundreds of people converged on the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple in Old Trafford as the clock struck midnight to mark the beginning of the Year of the Rabbit.

Many lit incense sticks and offered prayers wishing their friends and family good luck, good health and prosperity.

Some people believe that to be the first to offer incense at a temple on New Year's Eve is particularly auspicious.

Manchester's Chinatown is due to play host to the traditional dragon dance and lion dance on Sunday.
