Football legend George Best's European Cup winner's medal has sold for £156,000 at auction.

The 1968 medal was among 13 items belonging to the Manchester United and Northern Ireland star to be sold at Bonhams in Chester on Wednesday.

It was expected to fetch up to £120,000 and the auction house described the final price as "staggering".

Proceeds of the sale, which totalled about £200,000, will go to the late footballer's sister, Barbara McNally.

The medal was presented to Best following Manchester United's 4-1 victory over Benfica, a win which made it the first English team to win the European Cup.

A replica of the medal, which was made for Best by the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) when he misplaced the original, sold for £9,000.

The BBC Lifetime Achievement Award awarded to the star in 2002 sold for £7,800 and his 2000 Belfast Telegraph Hall of Fame award raised £4,800.

Other lots sold included the 2000 International Hall of Champions award (sold for £3,960) and the Freedom of Castlereagh award (£4,560).

The last shirt worn by Best for Northern Ireland while he was still a Manchester United player on 14 November 1973, sold for £6,000.

A limited edition George Best Faberge egg commemorating his part in the 1968 final also sold for £25,200 - exceeding its top estimate by more than £5,000.

George Best died in November 2005, aged 59.

The Belfast-born forward made 470 appearances for United between 1963 and 1974, scoring 179 goals.
